IELTS(International English Language Testing System)
IELTS, or the International English Language Testing System, is a widely recognized test that assesses English language proficiency. It is jointly managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, the British Council, and IDP Education Australia.
There are two versions of the IELTS: the Academic Version and the General Training Version.
- Academic Version: Designed for those looking to enroll in universities or other higher education institutions, as well as professionals like doctors and nurses who wish to study or practice in an English-speaking environment.
- General Training Version: Intended for individuals seeking non-academic training, employment, or for immigration purposes.
IELTS is accepted by nearly all academic institutions in Australia, the UK, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and over 1,800 universities in the USA. It is also the only English test accepted for immigration to Australia and is recognized by immigration authorities in the UK and Canada.
IELTS Test Structure
The IELTS test is divided into four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Scores are reported in “bands” for each section as well as an overall score. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking modules, while the Reading and Writing modules vary depending on whether the Academic or General Training Version is chosen.
- Total Test Duration: 2 hours and 45 minutes.
- Test Order: The first three sections—Listening, Reading, and Writing—are completed in one sitting without breaks. The Speaking section may be scheduled on the same day or the following day, depending on the test center’s discretion.
An IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is valid for two years.
- Listening: 30 Minutes
- Reading: 60 Minutes
- Writing: 60 Minutes
- Speaking: 11-14 Minutes
IELTS Band Scale
IELTS scores are reported on a nine-band scale, with each band corresponding to a specific level of English proficiency:
- 9: Expert User – Full command of the language, highly accurate, fluent, with complete understanding.
- 8: Very Good User – Fully operational command of the language with occasional inaccuracies.
- 7: Good User – Operational command with occasional inaccuracies and misunderstandings.
- 6: Competent User – Generally effective command despite some inaccuracies.
- 5: Modest User – Partial command of the language, able to handle basic communication.
